The Nirbhaya incident was unforgettable for the entire nation. On December 16, 2012, the 23-year-old paramedical student, who is also called Nirbhaya (or fearless), was gang-raped by six men in a moving bus. She was assaulted with an iron rod and her intestines were pulled out. She died at a hospital in Singapore thirteen days later. The incident sparked widespread protests across the country with everyone sought strict action against the accused.
The Delhi High Court and the trial court gave capital punishment to four convicts (Mukesh, Pawan Gupta and Vinay Sharma, Akhay Kumar Singh, 31). In 2017, the Supreme Court upheld the death penalty and dismissed pleas filed by three out of the four convicts. One of the accused in the case, Ram Singh, had allegedly committed suicide in the Tihar Jail.
The case later forced the government to introduce several stringent changes to laws on crime against women.
It may still take months before the punishment is meted out. Meanwhile, a plea has been filed by the parents of Nirbhaya seeking death warrant of four convicts without any delay.
Now, Netflix has come out with the trailer of its forthcoming series, Delhi Crime. It is inspired by and follows the Delhi Police investigation into the Nirbhaya case. The seven-part anthology series, will be available on the platform from March 22, 2019.
