A writer who never shied away from telling the truth, and only truth, in his stories. He never minced his words while revealing the ugliest face of the society. He will stay relevant for ages to comes, he will resonate within the hearts of feminists and voiceless women. He is the bold and fearless Saadat Hasan Manto. It was a moment of joy when Nandita Das announced the biopic ‘Manto’ and Nawazuddin Siddiqui in the titular role.
There were no doubts that Nawaz’s rustic appeal will do full justice to the role, but those who were unsure of this match must check out the first look of the movie. The transformation of the ‘Raman Raghav’ actor into Manto is quite convincing. The first look footage was shown to potential buyers at the 70th Cannes Film Festival by HP Studios.
Nandita Das is quite passionate about the project, she told Hollywood Reporter,
I first read Manto’s stories when I was in college and was fascinated by how truthful and edgy the stories were, and how contemporary they were. I wanted to make a film on his life and his work. He believed having the courage to speak the truth was important. In his writing, he addressed free speech and women’s issues. He was also a feminist. Everything he says is extremely contemporary and addresses issues of today.
Nandita Das is leaving no stone unturned to make this movie look as authentic as possible. She has been in touch with family and friends of Manto and his wife, Safia . She is also relying a lot on VFX to remove modern elements from the landscape of the film.
The amount of hard work done in the production is commendable and Saadat Hasan Manto is a writer close to our hearts. Let us just restlessly wait for the movie to release.
