While deciding a name for a child, the usual practice is to keep a name that is not very common. But the people in the village Bhadrapura in Dharwad district of Karnataka give such distinguished names to their children that you will literally go ROFL on hearing them.
Glucose, Coffee, Google, Military, Obama, Amitabh Bachchan, Anil Kapoor, Elizabeth, High Court, America, English, One By Two and Shah Rukh Khan are only a few of the examples of the names of people in this village. These are not their nicknames but their formal names that appear on their Aadhar Card, voter I-card, passport and other documents.
Hakki Pakki tribal community started the ritual of giving strange names to their children about a decade ago. Whenever they heard any different word during their visit to a city, they named a child in their village that word.
Associated with each name is a story which is even more interesting than the name itself. For instance, a girl who was born near a coffee plantation is named Coffee.
People of this community speak 14 different languages, and practice unique rituals just like their unique names. The groom’s family gives dowry to the bride during a wedding and in case of a divorce, the girl has to return half of the dowry she received.
