Item numbers have been keeping alive the spirit of most of the Bollywood movies even though they might not be having any direct involvement in the script. These item numbers were introduced in movies to compensate love-making scenes, which our ‘Aadarshvadi’ society couldn’t tolerate. That’s weird actually because they could very easily tolerate rape scenes on the big screen rather than an act of love. Without starting any debate on that, let’s recall the most popular Bollywood item songs or the best dance songs of Bollywood.
1. Aa Jaane Jaa, Inteqam (1969)
Helen, the queen of item numbers, danced to the music produced by Laxmikant Pyarelal and Lata Mangeshkar’s voice added magic to the song. Helen, with her seductive looks and energy, tried luring a man who was locked in a cage. I bet there might have been many men who wanted to be in that cage.
2. Piya Tu Ab To Aaja, Caravan (1971)
RD Burman’s music, Asha Bhosle’s voice and Helen’s dance – what a wonderful musical and visual delight! Gorgeous Monica waiting for her love, a glass full of wine, moonlight, a wonderful setup, and talent of Helen, these are the perfect ingredients for an item number. How many of you have actually called out Monica’s name in the same style “Moooonnnnniiiiiiccaaaaaaaaaaaa oh my darling”??
3. Main Aayi Hoon UP Bihar Lootne, Shool (1999)
The only good thing which Bachoo Yadav did in the movie was throwing a party on his marriage anniversary and hiring a folk-dancer (Shilpa Shetty) to perform. This lady literally looted everyone’s hearts and Raato Ki Neend. The peppy dance number and the dance sequence flashes right in front of the eyes just as this song gets played and the Latka Jhatkas are so hard to control.
4. Babuji Zara Dheere Chalo, Dum (2003)
The beautiful and pleasing personality of Yana Gupta, the Czech beauty, surely had thousands of volts of Bijli to deliver in this song. The desperate eyes of the dancers did a lot of justice to Yana’s sexy and steamy looks. Chunne Se Jall Jaaoge turns out to be true when there’s a transition from the rural to a totally modern backdrop and Yana sets the floor on fire.
5. Kajra Re, Bunty Aur Babli (2005)
This song features the magic created by two trios, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy with the music, and the three Bachchans, Amitabh-Abhishek-Aishwarya with their dance. This item number was fully loaded, the re-invented Qawaali genre and the Kajra in Aishwarya’s eyes made the song extremely popular among the masses.
6. Beedi Jalaile, Omkara (2006)
Caution: Dhumrpaan Sehat Ke Liye Hanikarak Hai. Shakespeare could have never imagined that the Indian adaption of his play Othello could have such a raunchy song in it. The hotness of the dusky beauty Bipasha Basu could have set the most expensive cigars on fire.
7. Munni Badnaam Hui, Dabangg (2010)
This is the song from where the name game starts. Munni Badnaam in a way added fuel to the fire which had been started by item numbers. Salman Khan, Sonu Sood, and Malaika Arora Khan carried the song really well with their dance, looks and HOT bodies.
8. Sheila Ki Jawani, Tees Maar Khan (2010)
The only thing to watch in the movie Tees Maar Khan was this song. Katrina Kaif has the best moves in the business right now and we all saw that in the song. All the Sheila Aunties must have had a great time listening and dancing to the tunes of this song. This is one of the most popular item songs in Bollywood.
9. Chikni Chameli, Agneepath (2012)
Everyone was eagerly waiting for KJo’s Agneepath and as they say “Sabar Ka Phal Meetha Hotta Hai”, we got Chikni Chameli as a bonus. Yet again, Katrina Kaif was successful in casting a spell over the audiences with her dance moves.
10. Fevicol, Dabangg 2 (2012)
This song also had the Teen Ka Tarka, i.e. 3-Ks, Kareena Kapoor Khan. We had never imagined that ‘Zandu Balm’ and ‘Fevicol’ could be a part of the sexiest dance numbers ever. This song is another example that when it comes to entertainment, the Kapoors never miss the bull’s eye.
