Muslim women beneficiaries of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) in Uttarakhand are insisting on having their pictures clicked only in a burqa.
The pictures of beneficiaries have to taken and uploaded on the PMAY portal along with land details. However, officials faced resistance in Muslim-dominated areas of Dehradun, Roorkee and Haridwar, where many have objected to lifting their burqa to have their pictures clicked.
When officials failed to agree the women, they took their pictures in a burqa standing in front of their respective plots holding a slate with their name on it.
These beneficiaries are allotted an amount of Rs 1.60 lakh to construct a pucca house under the scheme.
The PMAY scheme was started last year for people in rural areas who did not have access to pucca houses. The scheme demanded the owner to be a woman family member.
A total of 8,120 beneficiaries were chosen under the scheme in Uttarakhand, majority of them in three districts – Haridwar (2649), Udham Singh Nagar (2411) and Dehradun (1535).
