Four months back, the Shiv Sena demanded that the government should change the colonial names of seven suburban railway stations in Mumbai. Yesterday, a delegation of Shiv Sena leaders met Rajnath Singh in New Delhi to take up this demand.
Arvind Sawant, Shiv Sena MP, told Indian Express,
The Home Minister has given us his assent on changing the name of the station at the earliest. He also said the government would consider changing the name of Charni Road station at the earliest.
He further demanded to rename stations according to their location. He stated,
Most railway stations are named after the areas they are located in. There are some stations where the name of the area is different from the name of the station. We demanded that such stations be known by the name of the area.
If the amendments are made by the government, then, Mumbai Central station will be renamed Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Grant Road station will be renamed Gamdevi, Charni Road as Girgaum and Elphinstone Road as Prabhadevi.
Earlier, under Shiv Sena-BJP rule, Victoria Terminus was rechristened Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus.
