On screen as well as off screen, Sanjay Dutt’s image has been of a bad boy. When the police were looking for the people behind 1993 Mumbai blasts, they learned that some people from Bollywood were also involved in the incident. On the grounds of suspicion, the police arrested Bollywood producers Hanif Kadawala and Samir Hingora.
This was the time when Sanjay Dutt was working with Hanif Kadawala and Samir Hingora in their film ‘Sanam’. As per media reports, Hanif tried to hide Sanjay Dutt’s name but because of police’s pressure, he ultimately spoke out.
At the time when police suspected Sanjay Dutt’s involvement in the blasts, the actor was shooting for ‘Aatish’ in Mauritius. When he returned to India after completing the shoot, the police arrested him right at the airport. He was then taken straightaway to Mumbai Crime Branch office. The police had received the information of Sanjay Dutt’s arrival from Sunil Dutt.
During the investigation, Sanjay Dutt denied all the allegations on him regarding the blasts in the city. However, he admitted to having AK 56 guns. He then revealed that underworld don Dawood Ibrahim’s brother Anees Ibrahim had given him some arms and ammunition. The Supreme Court of India had sentenced him to a 5 years jail term for his involvement in the blasts.
Reportedly, when Sunil Dutt asked Sanjay Dutt as to why he had acquired those arms, Sanjay had said that he had Muslim blood in his veins and could not bear what was happening in the city. However, according to some other reports, Sanjay Dutt had said that he had acquired the arms for the protection of his family from the riots that had been going on in Mumbai.
