Team India became the T20 champion by winning the T20 World Cup in 2007. The team’s victory gave new hopes to the cricket fans who were disappointed by the deteriorating position of the team around the globe. After the disastrous exit of Indian cricket team in the first round itself of the ODI World Cup, questions against the abilities of the senior players started rising.

26-year-old Mahendra Singh Dhoni was the newest member of the team. His fresh ideas, cricketing abilities, and dedication to do something big was something that impressed everyone. And then the idea of making him the captain of the team came into the minds of the board members.

Initially, the idea behind making Dhoni the captain was just an experiment. Fortunately, the cricketer lived up to everyone’s expectation and became successful in improving the team’s position. While cricketers like Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh, Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir were in the race of becoming the captain, MS Dhoni became everyone’s choice. While these cricketers were proven performers, their ability to lead the team was not on point.

Talking about his selection, Dhoni revealed that the senior players played an important role. Seeing his honesty and dedication towards the game, people soon started putting their trust in him. Then there was no looking back. In no time he became popular among cricket fans as ‘Captain Cool’.

Revealing why he thinks he was chosen as the captain, he told The Print:

“Maybe it was the honesty that I had, and my ability to read the game. Reading the game is very important, and even though I was one of the youngest in the team at that point of time, when asked about my views by a senior player, I was not afraid or hesitant to share my feelings about the game.”
