Welcome to Gurgaon, the concrete city of India.
This post is specifically for the people who are planning to relocate to Gurgaon. If you have been following the news headlines, I can bet you are at least concerned about the city’s traffic and power-cut problems.
But, don’t worry!
Mentioned below are certain handy tips and tricks, which will help make your stay safe, fun and comfortable in Gurgaon.
#1. Get your own conveyance – most preferably a car (bikes/scooties can be unsafe). Gurgaon’s public transport system is horrible and unreliable. Do not be overconfident that you can easily manage with Auto Rickshaws. The auto-walas here do not kick start their auto until they have a dozen people aboard.
Crazy, but that’s how it is in Gurgaon.
#2. Going out alone, especially during the odd hours is a bad idea. If at all, go out in groups of 4 or at least 3. Roam around only in gated localities and communities.
The city at night – looks beautiful but demons in the dark are just as ugly.
#3. Learn to speak Hindi (at least a bit, if you don’t know it already).
People around here find it really un-cool to converse in English and unlike this, you’d have to really work on that.
#4. Do not forget to get an AC before the merciless summer comes knocking.
It can be that hot in Gurgaon in May – July, no kidding.
#5. You are sure to find a mix of cultures here in Gurgaon, as everybody here originally hails from a different city. Gurgaon has no roots of its own. You can easily find people from your town or city here. Make some friends.
#6. Huge and lavish Malls have mushroomed in Gurgaon, which are perhaps the best hangout places here (almost for every season). But, you’re going to have a tough time in the parking lot. Be ready for that.
#7. Window shop at malls. You will save a great deal.
#9. You will come across paying-guest accommodations more often. Although the housing and commercial constructions are quite captivating in Gurgaon, but due to its poorly developed drainage system, majority of sectors are bound to get flooded with water during the rainy season. Keep that in mind when hunting for a dwelling here.
#10. If you are planning to put up in any one of the paying guests accommodations, know the terms and conditions well in advance. If you don’t, you may have to spend almost a third of your entire salary on paying electricity and rent bills.
#11. Have fun, when you can. You can enjoy your weekends in Gurgaon by going for bowling at 32Milestone, watching a play in the Epicenter, catching up a musical live performance at KOD and savor the delicious Buffet served here or simply appreciate a short recreational trip at the Rajiv Gandhi Energy Park or maybe at the Biodiversity Park.
#12. You are sure to fall in love with this place if you are a dipsomaniac, chain smoker or a party animal.
#13. Gurgaon is a delight for all the foodies our there! Right from the authentic Lebanese to delightful Italian and some mouthwatering Chinese, you are sure to love the menus offered by the restaurants here. With numerous flavors of beer and Tequila shots, the pubs and restaurants in Gurgaon offer quite a treat.
#14. Get to know the routes of the Delhi Metro. It will be easy for you to take metro to various places in Delhi or Noida and back.
#15. Power cuts during summers are common, and they can literally suck the life out of your body. Keep up with your backup plan – install inverters or generators in your house way before the arrival of summer.
#16. Do NOT pick a fight. There are 100% chances that this seemingly powerless guy you just called an asshole or something else in your mother tongue might call a dozen people and beat you up in full day light.
#17. Burglaries, chain snatchings and pick pocketing do not happen every day or to everyone but they’re very real. Be safe. Take precautions.
Welcome to Gurgaon!
