Indian Hockey Wizard Mohammed Shahid, Passes Away; PM Modi, Among Others Mourn His Loss

Hockey legend Mohammed Shahid has passed away. He was 56.

Shahid was battling kidney and liver problems and was admitted at a Gurugram’s Medanta hospital for past few weeks. He breathed his last on July 20, 2016.

 

Looking at Shahid’s plight, many had criticized the Indian Hockey federation, Hockey India, for not doing the needful to help the legend.

The Indian sports ministry had then announced that they would take care of his medical expenses and had even given an grant of Rs.10 lakh for overhead expenses.

Shahid was part of the Indian hockey team that clinched gold in 1980 Moscow Olympics.

 

Shahid was battling for life after he suffered a bout of jaundice and dengue which made his condition worse.

After learning about Shahid’s death, PM Modi along with many others took to Twitter to express their grief.
