The state-owned oil marketing companies (OMCs) have sent a verbal advisory to dealers of petrol pumps to put up pictures of Prime Minister Narendra Modi at their retail outlets. This has further triggered a wave of  protests in different parts of the country. Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL), Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL), and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) have directed the dealers to proceed with the display of Modi’s images ahead of the 2019 elections.

As per a recent report, S.S. Gogi, the president of Consortium of Indian Petroleum Dealers (CIPD) revealed the details. He also mentioned that the dealers of various petrol pumps are being threatened to put PM Modi’s pictures.

This is what he mentioned:

“They are asking us to display the picture of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in retail outlets and those who refuse are threatened  with blocking of supplies.”

As per the dealers, the area officers of the companies are given these instructions. The display of the instruction also included one of the schemes to provide LPG connections to below poverty line families.

It has also been mentioned by the dealer consortium that no written communication was given to them and that the instructions came from the territory manager and the sales officers from different companies.

These suggestions include the display of hoardings promoting government scheme to provide LPG connections to below poverty line families together with Modi’s picture on it.

It has also been said that these instructions were given in order to promote various government schemes like Pradhan Mantri Ujwala Yojana. It has also been said that the government and the OMCs wanted to make use of these petrol pumps as a representational too for the centre.
