Angered by the death of a terrorist, a mob in Shopian in Jammu & Kashmir burned down the house of the former PDP sarpanch who was killed by the terrorist. Police rescued family members of former PDP sarpanch Mohammad Ramzan Sheikh which included his mother, Rafiqa, wife, Nusrat Begum, brother, Farooq Ahmed Sheikh, two sons and two daughters.
On Monday evening, three terrorists of Hizbul Mujahideen entered Sheikh’s house to abduct him and opened fire on him resulting in on the spot death of the sarpanch. As per report by NDTV, when his family made attempts to resist, a gun went off and a bullet hit one of the terrorists identified as Showkat Ahmad killing him as well. The other two terrorists managed to escape the spot.
On Tuesday, after the last rites of the terrorist were performed, a huge crowd of terrorist sympathizers went to Sheikh’s house in Chak Houmona of Shopian and attacked his family. The family had just returned from Sheikh’s burial. It was the prompt intervention by security forces that saved the lives of the family but the two-storey house was completely destroyed.
The Times of India quotes S.P. Vaid, director general of state police, calling the incident “inhumane” and “shameless”. He said:
“It’s simply inhumane. The tears of his kin had not even dried when they had to run for cover for their own lives. The family had not even condoled the death of their loved one properly before such a senseless act instigated by terrorists was perpetrated on them in less than 24 hours.”
According to the police, the mob was spurred on by the overground workers of Hizbul Mujahideen, the terror outfit to which Showkat belonged. An FIR has been registered against those who attacked the house and the family of the former PDP sarpanch and a “strict” action has been promised by the police.
Police has also said that the family has been moved to a secret and safe location.
It is distressing to see locals being targeted by terrorists in the already vulnerable area of Jammu & Kashmir. But it is even more deplorable to see supporters of these terrorists thriving in the area and supporting their inhuman acts.
What the mob did to Farooq Ahmed Sheikh’s house and his family just a day after his death highlights the serious issue that the supporters of terrorists in Jammu & Kashmir are as big a problem as the terrorists themselves. It indicates that the terror can not be wiped out from the territory unless the terrorists stop getting the support which is empowering and endorsing them in their acts of barbarism.
After the attack on Sheikh’s house, yet another shameless and merciless act by these supporters of terrorists, this is precisely what Twitterati also feel:

Shameful! Like killing the PDP leader Ramzan Sheikh was not enough that terrorists have now set his home ablaze. What kind of ‘azaadi’ are they expecting out of all this? pic.twitter.com/afD9OZOWTe

It should be noted that in February, Indian Army chief General Bipin Rawat had warned terrorist sympathizers saying that they, too, will face action if they interfere with anti-terrorist operations.
