Any cinephile must have seen and loved the movie Karwaan by now. Did you wonder who played the actress? Did you like and appreciate her? That was Mithila Palkar. The Netflix enthusiasts might have seen the recent movie Chopsticks. Yes, Nirma was the same girl too. But, would you believe that her cinematic journey began because of a simple YouTube video that went viral? Surprising isn’t it?
And then came a few web series, a series of ads, YouTube short films and much more. But we’ll come to that later as today we see how this YouTube sensation came to be a household name, as we look at the journey of this curly-haired actress.
Her acting stint actually began way back when she 12, where she participated in an inter-school science drama festival. However, there was a long gap between then and when she actually chose acting as a career in 2014. It was in that year, that she took the plunge and got into theatre and acting full-time. Her theater pursuits were with Q Theatre Productions (QTP) with whom she was associated for an year. During this time she was also a part of the national youth theatre and its annual festival, Thespo.
Her first acting stint was in the movie Katti Batti where she played Imran Khan’s sister. Though the movie didn’t do well at the box office, it did help Mithila Palkar bag many commercials with big names like Maggi, Tata Tea and Zomato.
However, things took a drastic turn for the good in 2016. It was when she randomly decided to do a home video cover version inspired by Anna Kendrick’s ‘Cup Song’ from Pitch Perfect, where she sang a Marathi song titled ‘Hi Chal Turu Turu’ using a cup. In her own words, “It was not planned because I never thought of anything and was just having fun with what I was doing. The cup video just blew out of proportion, not in the negative sense of course,”
The Journey so far
Following the cup song fame and through her association with Thespo, Mithila got her role in the satirical YouTube show News Darshan.
This was immediately followed by Girl in the City, a web series where she played the lead.
Alongside this, she also did another web series titled The Little Things, which saw huge success. It became so popular that Penguin Random House got the series published as a book. Furthermore, Netflix purchased the franchise of Little Things and its second season premiered on this platform rather than on YouTube where the first season was aired.
After the first season of Little Things, began Mithila’s foray onto the big screen as a lead actress where she made her debut in Marathi cinema with the film Muramba. Thereafter came almost every cinephile’s favorite road trip movie Karwaan, where she shared screen space with none other than Irrfan Khan.
Her other noteworthy achievements include being listed in the Forbes list of 30 Under 30 list of young achievers, in February 2018.
As of now, Mithila has completed shooting for a film about Taco Bell’s Quesalupa which will be a crossover between a chalupa and a quesadilla filled with cheese. Her next big project is going to be Tribhanga which will be directed by Renuka Shahane.
Other than this, as far as her career graph goes, it has only seen an upward climb and based on that, we can be sure of many more (great) things to come from this petite, cute, relatable and talented actress.
