Indian Army has been using the Maruti Suzuki Gypsy for quite a long time. The 4×4 Gypsy became the transportation vehicle for the defense forces due to its low cost and efficiency in extreme terrains.
Now, Tata Motors have been selected to replace the aging Maruti Suzuki Gypsy by modern and rugged Safari Storme by Tata Motors. The Indian Army will be supplied 3,192 units of Safari Storme SUV by Tata Motors which operates in some of the roughest terrains in the country.
The criterions of the replacement were hard roofs, 800 kg payload capacity and air conditioning as set by the Indian Army that the Maruti Suzuki Gypsy failed to meet.
Here are some of the first pictures of the beast in an attractive matte green paintjob that is being delivered to the Indian Army.
The military specific Tata Safari Storme has some additional features over the standard civilian SUV model such as the black out lamps mounted on the rear and front, bumper mounted with auxiliary lights and obviously, the cool military green paint in matte to avoid reflections. Few of these changes are mandatory for military vehicles in field use. In order to keep the vehicles concealed during night in wartime, these additions are very helpful.
Other modifications include a de-chromed look – meaning all chrome bits in a car including grille, exhaust tips etc. have been either sprayed with green paint or blacked out. It is important to keep the reflection as minimum as possible.
There is a large hook that has been added to the rear to mount a canister on the rear fenders. There is a radio antenna added to the bonnet of the military version of the Tata Safari Storme.
Besides the major modifications, some minor mechanical changes have also been added to the car including beefier suspension and better underbody protection.
The Tata Safari Storme was introduced in 2012, aiming to deliver superior on-road and off-road capabilities and tough all round performance. There is a standard 2.2 liter, 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine which makes 154 bhp of peak power and 400 Nm of peak torque.
It has a ground clearance of 200 mm and is available in both low range and high range option along with a 6-speed manual gearbox.
