In a major victory for security forces in Kashmir, two militants were killed in an encounter at Manzimpora in South Kashmir’s Shopian district on Thursday evening. It is believed that these two militants recently surfaced in online videos along with the group headed by Hizbul commander Burhan Wani.
According to the police, the Special Operations Group and soldiers of Army’s 62 RR cordoned Manzimpora Imamsahib village and its adjacent orchards at 5 pm after “specific information about presence of militants there.”
“During the search operation, some militants present in an orchard fired upon the forces, triggering an encounter,” a security official said.
Altaf Khan, SP Shopian, said that the bodies of the two militants have been recovered. He said both the terrorists were associated with the militant group headed by Burhan.
The militants were identified as Adil Khanday of Barbug Shopian and Irshad Ahmad Sheikh of Maldera Shopian.
According to locals, Irshad was a well-educated fellow with Masters in Islamic Studies.
A complete shutdown is being observed in Shopian district of south Kashmir against the killing of Irshad and Adil on Friday.
All shops, business establishments and educational institutions were closed and the traffic was off the roads.
Inspector General of Police, Kashmir Range, Syed Javid Mujtaba Gillani, said the slain militants had surfaced in some videos uploaded on social networking sites recently.
“ They were finally gunned down by the joint operation by police and army. We had information about the presence of militants in the area.” he said.
Sources said that women in the area started to throw stones on the security forces to give the safe passage to the militants to escape from the encounter site.
