In what seems to be a blatant misuse of power and Muslim personal laws, Muslim scholars or maulanas have been recently caught in India Today’s sting operation for charging hefty amounts for one-night stands with divorced Muslim women, who are looking for one last chance to save their marriages.
As per Islamic law, if a divorced Muslim woman wishes to remarry her ex-husband, she has to get married to someone else first and spend a night with him before getting a divorce and remarrying the ex-husband. As complex as it sounds, the Muslim scholars tend to take advantage of this situation not only to satiate their lascivious desires but also to get huge sums of money in return for their “favor”.
The sting operation conducted by India Today had numerous clerics “interview” for a Nikah Halala. While other clerics belonging to different parts of northern India charged anything between Rs 25,000 to 50,000, there was one Hapur-based maulana, Mohammad Zahid, who runs a madrasa at Sikheda village and claims to be a nikah halala professional. He would charge anything between Rs 1 lakh and 1.5 lakh per woman to spend a night with her and later issue a halala certificate as proof of her being able to remarry. In matters of business, Zahid seems to be an absolute professional:
Between 1 lakh and 1.5 lakh….Not above Rs 1.5 lakh and not less than Rs 1 lakh.
However, little did he know that he was being trapped in an underground investigation and that his “interview” would actually go on air on national television. Since the day the operation went on air, Mohammad Zahid had been absconding from his village. According to police inspected Pankaj Lavania, a search has been conducted in the village but there is no trace of him.
