The communal tension concerning the celebration of Vijaya Dashami and Muharram procession in West Bengal this year is seemingly turning to be sourer with each passing day. Although Muharram is scheduled to be held on October 1, a day after Vijaya Dashami, the West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee debarred the Puja committees’ Durga idol immersion procession on Dashami after 4 PM, arguably to make room for Muharram processions. Needless to say, the decision had not gone down well with the Hindus in the state and the BJP. Mamata Banerjee faced severe criticism from various segments of society, following which the Calcutta High Court reverted her decision and criticized her as well as the Kolkata Police for their supposed inability at managing both religious activities in parallel.

Sambit Patra First Post

The news of this decision by the High Court spread like wildfire, with many news channels hosting live debate and discussion programs on the issue. Aaj Tak, which also held a similar program, had the national spokesperson for BJP, Sambit Patra and the president of the Ulema Council Maulana Nadeemuddin on their show.

While presenting his views, Maulana Nadeemuddin went to the extent of rebuking the Hindus for not being able to shift their festival to a different date. This angered the BJP spokesperson a great deal, who asked the Maulana to take his words back. Yet, the Maulana went on. Sambit Patra then asked the Maulana if the Muslims can postpone any of their occasions to a later date, just as he had asked of the Hindu community. Now, this sentence enraged the Maulana so much that he went to the extent of trying to grab Patra by his collar.
