Gold medal winning paralympian Mariyappan Thangavelu is not donating Rs.30 lakh to his school, the Government Higher Secondary School, as was highlighted by the media on Monday.
According to TOI, Thangavelu has plans for his school but he never said that he would donate Rs.30 lakh to it.
“I have a few plans in place for my school. But I didn’t say that I would donate 30 lakh. That’s all I can say for now,” he said.
Social media was abuzz on Monday with the news that Thangavelu is donating this huge sum from the prize money he is getting following his historic achievement at the Rio Paralympic Games 2016.
It was at his school in Periyavadagampatti in Salem district of Tamil Nadu where Thangavelu did his high jump practice.
The TOI report quotes his school coach and mentor R Rajendiran saying that the Rs.30 lakh donation news could have been a rumour spread by his father Thangavelu.
“Mariyappan expressed his disappointment to me in the afternoon about the sequence of events. He told me he never said such things. It’s his father who has probably spread such rumours. Maybe he is trying to patch up with his family again after the success of Mariyappan,” Rajendiran said on Monday.
Mariyappan’s father had abandoned his family some 10 years ago.
