Women and child development minister, Maneka Gandhi, has suggested legalizing marijuana in India for medical purposes to curb drug abuse.
This suggestion was made by Gandhi at a meeting of a group of ministers (GoM), which was chaired by the Home minister, Rajnath Singh.
Maneka Gandhi told PTI that marijuana should be legalized for medical purposes, especially as it serves a purpose in cancer.
These rule has already been adopted by some developed countries like the USA, Canada, and Australia.
She also said that the possibility of the same can be explored in India.
On the contrary side, the social justice and empowerment secretary, G. Latha Krishna Rao, said it may not be appropriate to legalize such drugs in view of the large population and low level of literacy in the country.
PM Narendra Modi has directed the GoM to study the draft policy for drug demand reduction which addresses the problem of drug and substance abuse in the country.
