In a shocking revelation, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar heaped praises on Khap panchayats. He said these groups had always been a significant contributor in resolving social issues and are part of “our traditions”, reports Hindustan Times.
At a felicitation function organised by the Sarvjatiya Kandela Khap and Kandela gram panchayat in Haryana, Khattar said:
“However, time and again, many misconceptions are spread about khaps that they are unconstitutional bodies, but I have always been saying that khaps act as custodian of our social customs. Khaps not only delivers judgments but it also exhorts the citizens.”
Being born in Nidana village which is under Maham Chaubisi Khap, Khattar further said that khaps are playing an important role in redressing public grievances as well as strengthening the feeling of brotherhood.
And it did not end there. Khattar thanked the khap panchayats for their role in the implementation of the ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ programme. He also urged the villagers to maintain honour and dignity of khap panchayats as per social traditions.
There is nothing wrong in praising the khap where it is due, but someone needs to ask the Chief Minister exactly what kind of “contributions” have the khaps made in resolving our social issues.
