The Jammu and Kashmir police have rescued a mentally challenged man who was being beaten up by the mob who believed in rumors that he was a braid chopper.
The man, Wasim Ahmad Tantray, was being thrashed by an angry group of locals in the fruit mandi area of Sopore in Kashmir.
Police received an information about this incident and immediately rushed to the location. According to NDTV, the police said:
“Immediately, a police party rushed to spot and found that a mob was beating one person ruthlessly. The miscreants had also burnt some grass and were trying to set the person ablaze. Some miscreants were trying to run a tractor over him.”
Tantray was later found to be mentally challenged and was in critical state. He had been referred to Srinagar civil hospital for further treatment.

More than 130 incidents of braid-chopping has been reported in Kashmir over the past one month. The police have been unable to make an arrest and have announced a reward of Rs.6 lakhs for anyone who provides valuable information.

Separatists groups have blamed security agencies for the attacks and called for a protest. Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has reassured the masses that the government will take necessary steps to nab the culprits and maintain peace and order.
