Often we come across stories of philanthropy that makes us all emotional. Indeed there are people who go out of their way to help others. However, there are also those whose acts are nothing more than a publicity gimmick. Remember the incident when a Surat-based diamond merchant gifted shiny new cars and flats as bonuses for Diwali? Yes, we all were in awe. Later it turned out that specific amount was deducted from the salaries of the employees every month. The deducted amount was used as the down payment for the ‘gift’. Are you wondering why so much of intro? Well, recently a news came across that was seen as a ‘great’ act by many.
Param Vir Chakra Awardee Subedar Major Yogendra Singh Yadav is no wonder a decorated member of the Indian Army. Recently, his car was stolen from outside of his resident. Naturally, he filed a complaint but the case remained unsolved.
To show their good side Mahindra came forward and gifted him a car to replace his stolen Scorpio. Mahindra Foundation along with Lal Bahadur Shastri Memorial Foundation gifted the car claiming it to be an act of honoring the brave Indian soldier. They also claimed that it is a gesture of respect.
Are you all ready to go aww? Then stop and think that does this act really about honoring the army man or just a CSR gimmick? I am inclined to go with the latter.
Done in name of ‘reaffirming the nation’s faith in the Indian army’, this act seems more like a publicity stunt. Why? Well, the ideal step would have been to find out the culprit. Rather, a company came forward and gifted a car. It is also a shame on the administration who are unable to provide safety to those who once served the nation. It further presents the question if the property of an army man is not secure then what about the common citizens?
The stench of publicity gimmick is also smelled by the netizens. While some praised the acts there were many who raised crucial questions.
We think this act is nothing more than a publicity gimmick. However, we are eager to hear your thoughts too! Don’t forget to share in the comments section below.
