The Mahagathbandhan of Bihar, comprising Janta Dal (U), Rashtriya Janta Dal (RJD) and Congress, appears to be on the brink of a collapse as the leaders continue to accuse each other of breach of trust.
This happened soon after JDU supremo, Nitish Kumar, decided to support Ram Nath Kovind for the first citizen of India. Ram Nath Kovind is the BJP’s nominee for the upcoming Presidential elections and is supported by other National Democratic Alliance (NDA) parties.

This decision of Nitish Kumar was severely criticized by many, including RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav and Congress.
Lalu Yadav termed Nitish’s decision of backing Kovind, a “historic” blunder and the Congress held that the chief minister of Bihar is plotting to defeat Meira Kumar, the opposition candidate for the office of the President. Deputy chief minister of Bihar, Tejashwi Yadav, was not far behind in castigating his own boss, calling him an egoist and opportunist. Meanwhile, senior BJP leader, Sushil Modi, has announced that his party is ready to support Nitish Kumar and his party as and when required.

Now the mahagathbandhan leaders have instructed their party functionaries to maintain restraint. Tejashwi accused the media and the BJP of trying to create a rift in the alliance which he alleged is rock solid. But considering their support for opposing candidates in the upcoming elections for the highest office in the country, the grand alliance (mahagathbandhan) appears to be at risk.
In a recent report by the Economic Times, former chief minister of Bihar, Lalu Prasad Yadav, said that the Lalu and Nitish alliance in unbreakable and it cannot be broken even by a chisel. Yadav further said that Sushil Modi is trying to break the alliance “like a fox”, but he will not succeed.
Considering the fact that none of the members of the alliance have a clear majority in the state, how they continue their political alliance in the future will be of immense significance for the politics in Bihar.
Hopefully, this statement from the RJD chief should end all speculations concerning the rift in the alliance and also between close friends Lalu Prasad Yadav and Nitish Kumar. But, since this is politics, one never knows what happens next!
