The 2019 General Election is only a few months away and the politics of India is taking new turns every day. Recently, a strong connection between the country’s glamor world and some possible digression in its political scenario came to light. According to a revelation made by Bollywood’s acclaimed producer, director, and writer Madhur Bhandarkar, in the 2014 elections, a section of Bollywood was against Modi becoming the prime minister of India.

During the inauguration of the workshop of Natya Shala, held recently at Bhilai, Madhya Pradesh, the filmmaker addressed the media and revealed that some people from Bollywood, which takes pride in its secular image, were against Modi.

Bhandarkar recalled that before the 2014 General Elections, the film industry was divided into two groups. One of these was supporting Modi, of which Anupam Kher and Bhandarkar himself were a part. The second was against Modi that had around 60 celebs who signed an appeal urging people to take an anti-Modi stance.

The filmmaker also discussed the controversy around its film ‘Indu Sarkar’ and said that he was deeply disappointed when no one supported him in the dispute. He strongly criticized politicisation of films and pressure on their ban. Bhandarkar also dismissed the rumor that his film was funded by BJP. He said that if he would need funding, it would be for an expensive film and not a low budget one like ‘Indu Sarkar’ that was made in Rs 6 crore.

Talking about the celebrities who signed the anti-Modi appeal, Madhur Bhandarkar mentioned the names Vishal Bhardwaj, Nandita Das, Imtiaz Ali, Zoya Akhtar, Shubha Mudgal, Mahesh Bhatt, Kabir Khan and Aditi Rao Hydari.

Back in 2014 as well, Madhur Bhandarkar had initiated a debate on Twitter questioning the division of Bollywood into two sections under the “garb of stopping so-called divisive forces”. Take a look at his tweets from 2014 below:

Among those who supported the filmmaker were Anupam Kher, Tusshar Kapoor and film producer Ashoke Pandit. A large section of Twitter users also supported Bhandarkar and Modi and lashed out at Bollywood celebs who launched a sort of movement to prevent BJP’s win in the 2014 election.
