Former Atlético de Kolkata (ATK) player Luis Garcia, who helped the team win the Indian Super League Title (ISL) back in 2014 was recently in Delhi to promote Spanish football league, La Liga.
Garcia, who had also played in La Liga’s FC Barcelona team, on December 3 hosted India’s first ever live screening of the showpiece “El Clasico” match between FC Barcelona and their traditional rival Real Madrid FC.
While the unprecedented number of Indian fans enjoyed the La Liga event, football star Luis Garcia answered few tough questions about his former team in India, and what he thinks about them.
While he admitted that he still follows ATK’s progress in the league as they would be ‘always part of his career’, he added that he has ‘big love’ for the team and his fans in India, as they treated the players so well when they first came here.
He added that he still has ‘friends’ in ATK and didn’t think much of the fact that they didn’t qualify for the playoffs this time as it is always the overall results that matters.
When asked about his opinion of the Indian players since the introduction of ISL, Garcia said that he saw how important the local players were for the team and how they played a key role during the ISL match.
He also said that if this tradition of ISL continued and the Indian players kept growing the same way, they would soon play a huge role in the growth of the national team on the international front.
La Liga recently entered the Indian market so as to popularise the sport and has even established its first India office in New Delhi with the aim promote the league.
