Last week we reported that Lt. Col. Shrikant Prasad Purohit walked out of the jail after the Supreme Court granted him bail. Accused in the 2008 Malegaon Blast Case, he has spent 9 years in prison. Lt. Col. Purohit approached the Supreme Court of India after his plea for bail had been rejected by the Bombay High Court and told the court that he was playing the role of a spy of the army and was not involved in any terrorist activity.
Lt. Col. Purohit was jailed on charges of stealing 60 kg RDX from the Army and funding and training Abhinav Bharat, an organization that was reportedly behind the 2008 Malegaon blast in which 7 people were killed.
Almost a week after walking out, his ordeal in the jail gets revealed. CNN News 18 has posted a video in which Lt. Col. Purohit can be seen talking to a fellow officer during a medical examination a few months before coming out of jail on bail. He is telling the officer about the brutal torture that he has undergone during his imprisonment.
In the video, Lt. Col. Shrikant Prasad Purohit can be clearly heard saying,
First they beat me up for 5-7 days, and then left me alone for 2 days so that the swelling could subside. Then again they beat me up for 8-9 days. When they got to know that my leg has broken, they hung me upside down on a bar and then again beat me up. When I was taken to JJ Hospital, it was said that nothing had happened to me. Then I got court orders for my medical examination and came here for the tests. In all the tests, it was revealed that I was tortured. You remember how we dealt with those three people who had crossed the border? There is a proper way to interrogate terror suspects. Unnecessary violence is not the way of the Army. But they were enjoying beating up an Army officer. There is a respect for a Colonel but they do not realize that. They just wanted to have fun. May God never let an Army officer visit a police station. I kept on telling them that I have an implant in my leg but they were determined to torture me.
