The death of veteran actress Sridevi came as a shock for the entire nation. She passed away after suffering cardiac arrest while attending a wedding in Dubai. Though grief-stricken, this story of love between Sridevi and her husband Boney Kapoor will certainly bring a smile on the face of the fans.
When Boney realized his love for Sridevi, he was already married to Mona Shourie. They also had two children Arjun and Anshula.
Much like a super-hit Bollywood film, he actually fell for her when he saw her in a Tamil film in the late 70s. Since then, he was determined to cast her in his films and hopefully welcome in his life.
His first effort to meet her was when he flew from Mumbai to Chennai to cast her in his film. However, as luck will have it, she was away shooting in Singapore. He came back empty-handed but she dominated his mind and heart. He said:
“We were planning a film with Rishi Kapoor. I even bought the rights of that film. He didn’t have the time to watch the original film. I thought before the hero can be confirmed, let me just check on this heroine (Sridevi). I travelled all the way to Chennai to her house but got to know that she was shooting in Singapore. But she never got off my mind.”
Finally, the day came when Boney met the love of his life on the film set. Sridevi was clueless about his feelings but he was overwhelmed with joy. In Boney Kapoor’s words:
“When I met her for the first time, it was like a dream come true. She’s an introvert and doesn’t communicate very easily with strangers but the few words she spoke, in broken Hindi and English, moved me and made me even more curious to know her more.”
At the movie set for Mr. India, Boney made every possible effort to make sure that Sridevi was comfortable. Sridevi, who was an introvert by nature, slowly started opening herself to Boney Kapoor. Thus, their friendship bloomed.
However, by that time Boney Kapoor was head over heels in love with her, so he confessed his feelings to then-wife Mona. Though shocked, she decided to go her separate ways. In an interview, she said:
“He (Boney) was 10 years older to me. I was 19 when I married him. So I literally grew up with him. Ours was a 13-year-old marriage. So it came as a shock when I realised that my husband was in love with somebody else… There was nothing left in the relationship to give it a chance because Sridevi was already with a child.”
Initially, Sridevi maintained being a friend. However, seeing Boney’s care and commitment towards her family, she started reciprocating the feeling. Soon they were happily married.
With her passing, she will now remain alive through her movies. She has a guest appearance in the upcoming film ‘Zero,’ but her last film as a protagonist was ‘Mom.’
In an interview, Boney Kapoor revealed that ‘Mom’ was actually his gift to Sridevi.
“If I was Shah Jahan I would have built her a Taj Mahal. If I were a painter, I would have made her a beautiful painting. But, I make movies. Hence, I don’t know a better way than the gift of films for her.”
Truly, a love story that touches the heart!
