Finding a new way to stop people from defecating in the open, the Madhya Pradesh government have now delegated powers to district collectors for cancelling the ration card and/or gun licence of the offenders.

The power has also been given to district panchayat CEOs and is part of India’s Swachch Bharat Mission.

The announcement about the move was made by Panchayat and Rural Development minister Gopal Bhargav, who was addressing a function on Swachch Bharat Mission.

He went on to add that merely constructing toilets at homes won’t work and that the public need to be made aware of proper hygiene.

Bhargav said that the state needs to pull up its socks and completely get rid of open defecation in order to make the Swachch Bharat Mission a success.

He then asked the district collectors and district panchayat CEOs to take some harsh measures, if that is what is required to stop people from defecating in the open.
