In yet another man vs. animal conflict, a pride of lions decides to negotiate traffic on a busy highway in Gujarat. The tendency of humans to continuously expand their urban boundaries and venture into the territories of animals has led to several conflicts.
On April 15, 2017, traffic on the busy Pipavav-Rajula highway in Gujarat came to a standstill when truckers saw a pride of lions waiting to cross the road. As magnificent as it is, one bike rider went dangerously close to the pride while filming them.
When the truckers realized what they are witnessing is, perhaps, a once in a lifetime sight, they decide to halt and make the most of the breathtaking incident. Out of the twelve lions, one lion led the others while another one decided to turn back.
This incident is a grim reminder of the shrinking forests and construction of highways around the periphery of national parks. Locals said that the sighting of lions on this highway is common and several lions have been killed after being hit by moving vehicles.
The government needs to wake up and address the issue. On the one hand, several projects and conservation projects for these wild cats have been put into effect and, on the other, hundreds of them die each year after being mowed down by vehicles.
