It is just a couple of days ago that the Supreme Court of India has abolished Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code which criminalized homosexuality. The landmark verdict has, in fact, led to a wave of celebration. While the celebration of the victory of love continues across the country, it is also important, especially at this historic moment, to celebrate the freedom of making homosexual or lesbian-oriented movies.
Now that the law has been decriminalized, we hope many more such movies will come up in the days to come. But before that, let’s take a look at five lesbian Bollywood movies that are banned in India.
Unfreedom is a lesbian drama which is banned in India. It is said that while appearing for censorship, the censor board suggests some cuts, but the film director, Raj Amit Kumar, refused to remove any scene from the movie. So he released the movie in North America in 2015. The film stars Victor Banerjee, Adil Hussain, and Preeti Gupta.
2. I Can’t Think Straight
I Can’t Think Straight is an award-winning lesbian movie. It is directed by Shamim Sarif and released in 2008. The movie is based on the novel of the same name. It stars Lisa Ray and Sheetal Sheth.
Girlfriend is another lesbian Bollywood movie written and directed by Karan Razdan. This movie also made great controversy mainly because of the sexually explicit scenes between the two female actresses Isha Koppikar and Amrita Arora.
4. Men Not Allowed
Men Not Allowed is a 2006 Bollywood movie starring Payal Rohatgi and Tina Mazumdar in the lead role. It is directed by Shrey Srivastava.
Fire is a 1996 Indian-Canadian romantic drama film written and directed by Deepa Mehta, starring Shabana Azmi and Nandita Das. It was one of the first mainstream Bollywood films to explicitly show homosexual relations.
