A popular Tamil magazine, Kumudam Reporter, received a backlash on various social media platforms. Why?
In the latest issue, the magazine cover story was “Leggings are vulgar: Today’s youth are exceeding limits” with close-up photographs of the backs of women wearing leggings.
Not only that, the story blamed women for wearing obscene clothes and said men stare at them because they wear skin tight clothes (like leggings).
Outraged by the sexist attitude, Netizens slammed the magazine and asked it to apologize for its ‘horrendous’ editorial decision.
Absolutely horrendous stuff from #kumudam. Taking pics like this & actually making a story out of women’s leggings. pic.twitter.com/JPWt8rqclT

Kumudam of course has no problem publishing near-nude pics of actresses. It’s the common woman who doesn’t have right to choose her clothes. — Meena Kandasamy (@meenakandasamy) September 23, 2015
Guys wearing shorts, unbuttoned shirts & vest are Normal but a girl wearing legging even with a long kurta is obscene #sexist much #kumudam

Also, the magazine was criticized for photographing women backs without their permission.
Dear #kumudam, did you guys even ask permission before you shot those ‘ethical’ pictures of women’s back for your front cover? — No One (@shafanasays) September 23, 2015
Horribly sexist, regressive & completely inappropriate – photos shot without the women’s knowledge. #kumudam #shame pic.twitter.com/lkiSkPylJv — Shiva Jayashankar (@adyarite) September 23, 2015
The magazine should apologize for its cover story and pictures. This is clearly not journalism!
