How The Left Successfully Prevented Shazia Ilmi From Speaking And Diverted A Debate On Triple Talaq

The media and the Left cried foul when students from AISA and ABVP clashed at Ramjas College in Delhi. The Left was protesting against the cancellation of a speech by JNU student leader Umar Khalid.

They and their allies in the media claimed that their freedom of speech was being suppressed.

But just days before the incident, the Left had done exactly what it was opposing.

On February 16, BJP leader Shazia Ilmi was to speak on the issue of triple talaq at Jamia Millia Islamia University. The Left succeeded in forcing the organizers to reschedule the event.

Under pressure, the event was rescheduled to February 28 but it then came to light that Ilmi had been removed from the list of speakers.

The topic of the debate was changed to a more politically correct ‘Empowerment of Muslim Women’ instead of triple talaq.

Reports quote Shazia Ilmi saying, “The organisers barred me from speaking on triple talaq citing pressure from students’ body in Jamia Millia Islamia University. Students at Jamia Millia Islamia University don’t want any BJP leader to come and speak at the premier institution.”

While the media attention was drawn to the chaos at Ramjas, the Left quietly succeeded in pushing its agenda. They demanded that Umar Khalid, who was charged with sedition for his alleged anti-national slogans, has a right to speak but they themselves were playing out their silencing game in another theatre.

An India Today report says that despite the fact that the topic of the debate had been turned around, some Muslim speakers were still not happy with it.

The entire debate ended in chaos. The report says that the discussion was organized by Forum For Awareness Of National Security (FANS).

Ilmi slammed the hypocrisy of the Left-wing parties.

“When Tarek Fatah gets manhandled by a mob, Baba Ramdev or Taslima Nasreen are stopped from appearing at an event, why doesn’t the Left gang come out to protest? Freedom of expression seems to be selective for them,” she said.

When asked to comment, Jamia’s Dean Mehtab Alam reportedly said: “I also have heard such a story that we did not let them speak.”
