In what seems to be a great blow to the patriarchal powers of the country, Priyadarshini Niharika Sinha has become the first lady Commandant of CRP’s Armed Border Force (mostly referred to as Sashastra Seema Bal) in Chattisgarh. The sole woman officer in the entire area, Sinha is currently posted in Anantgarh-Rowghat area and is responsible for the security of Rowghat rail line area – an important mining zone of the country which is also infamous for the notoriety of the Naxals.

Daughter of Mahesh and Sobha Sinha, Niharika spent her early days in Chattisgarh’s Gariabandh district. However, she shifted base to Durg to complete her schooling from St. Xavier’s School and college from Chhatrapati Shivaji Institute of Technology (CSIT), from where she completed her engineering in electronics. With a desire to serve the country, she took CPO examinations and topped them in the Sub-Inspector category.

Always a bright girl, Priyadarshini Niharika was selected in both banking and police services but she rejected both the offers and chose the more dangerous armed forces instead.

She passed the UPSC examinations in 2014. Till that time, there was no position for women officers in the SSB. Luckily for her, it was in that year itself that SSB opened its gate to women officers and she, along with three others, became the first women officers to be selected as SSB personnel.

Always a shy person, Niharika had always somehow evaded the limelight by refusing to talk to the media.

Needless to say, her parents Mahesh and Sobha Sinha are extremely proud of their daughter. Although they admit they were not really keen on having their daughter join the armed forces instead of the banking and the police sector, Niharika’s endless will and desire to help the country amid all situations won their hearts. Today, they are extremely proud and happy that her daughter’s identity has become theirs.
