India’s first Netflix original series ‘Sacred Games’ is what everyone is talking about. Based on the critically acclaimed novel of the same name written by Vikram Chandra, the series is creating waves globally. What has attracted the audience more is the very raw nature of the script and a union of actors, who are so disparate and rad at their jobs! Starring Saif Ali Khan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Radhika Apte and now sought-after actress Kubra Sait, the series is breaking all records of popularity and has set new benchmarks!
We recently interacted with the starlet and found her to be someone who is here to stay. In an exclusive interview with TopYaps, this is how Kubra Sait discussed everything candidly!
What was it like to shoot for Sacred Games? How do you describe the role of ‘Kukkoo’? Was it challenging for you?
I couldn’t think for one moment that it was challenging as I was playing another human being. What was more challenging to me was the dancing part and to get the ’80s look right etc. The idea of playing Kukkoo (a transgender) was never, not even for a second, a moment of doubt. It was one of the greatest experience for me to work with an incredible team including Anurag Kashyap, Netflix, and Nawaz. This is the reason why I said yes and my experience was absolutely thrilling and positive.
‘Sacred Games’ has become extremely popular in the last few days. The whole country knows about you now. What does this popularity mean to you?
I always knew ‘Sacred Games’ is going to 190 countries. Sacred Games has now become one of the most popularly spoken about project across the world. The popularity that it has brought to me is one of its kind, and I know for a fact that there will never be another first. It’s like filling up my tank, for everything that I do in the future. Knowing that it has come with absolute honesty and that is something that I am going to keep close to my heart and value for a long time to come. It is not going to change the course of my life or the way I conduct myself, it is a great place to be in right now.
What’s new in your career after the Sacred Games? Any new upcoming projects you would like to tell our readers about?
While I was working on ‘Sacred Games’, I signed two more web series on different platforms. I am working on them. I am receiving scripts so that I hone my craft as an actor and become more dependent and reliant on my skill-sets as an actor. Apart from this I’ll be hosting, traveling etc. I have always been big on diversification, so I am going to continue and diversify my life.
How is Anurag Kashyap as a director? Which other directors in the industry are your favorites?
I honestly think that this interview should shatter the image of Anurag Kashyap for being grumpy, serious and a man who remotely uses abuses in his language. He is not scary at all! He is very sweet. The beauty of him as a craftsman is that he knows how to read people and he knows what his actor can give the character. He plays with both the psyches and eventually, makes them one, that is a very huge deal for a director of his stature. He never takes his craft too seriously and yet he knows, where to be serious about it, which is fantastic about Anurag.
I have always been a fan of Bejoy Nambiar’s work, I admire Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s work and I am a huge fan of Karan Johar. I still watch ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’. I would love to work with Nitesh Tiwari-Ashwiny and Shoojit Sircar. These are such amazing people and they have a great way of telling their stories and I would love to be a part of this movement.
Are you a Netflix person? Any personal favorites on Netflix?
I am a huge Netflix fan! I think that is what I do when I am not giving my interviews. I download a lot of shows and watch them on the flight and when I am in a different country while eating my lunch. My top 3 would be ‘Sacred Games’, ‘Fauda’ and ‘The Staircase’. I also have ‘Glow’ and a few Mexican shows to watch.
Who are your favorite actors in the entertainment industry?
I am a huge fan of Kangana Ranaut, Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra. Divya Dutta has inspired me to be an actor. Actresses like Scarlett Johansson and Cate Blanchett are powerful and wonderful actors as they constantly inspire you to do good stuff. If you ask me, it is great to take risks and learn to take risks from these wonderful actors.
