Last year, the chief minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee had put forward her view on Rohingyas. She said:
“All commoners are not terrorists. Some may be terrorists and they will be considered as terrorists. There is a distinction between terrorists and commoners. In every community, there can be good people and bad ones but a community is a community.”
The central government’s stand on Rohingyas taking shelter in West Bengal is different. The other time central agencies wrote to the Union home ministry alleging that the ruling Trinamool Congress in West Bengal not only flouted federal policies by speeding up and allowing the entry of Rohingyas from Myanmar into the state but also sheltering them.
Though many Rohingya families have taken shelter in West Bengal, people’s take on the crisis can never be the same. Ever since then, other than politicians, celebrities have also been concerned about the issue. The crisis has also dominated international headlines.
Emmy winners Riz Ahmed and Aziz Ansari; comedians Mindy Kaling, Kumail Nanjiani and Hasan Minhaj; actors Frieda Pinto and Nandita Das; writers Salman Rushdie, Madhur Jaffrey, Kamila Shamsie, Karan Mahajan and Mohsin Hamid; and dozens of others from various fields launched an appeal to help the Rohingyas.
And now, another celebrity has shared her opinion on the crisis. Recently Bollywood actress Koena Mitra expressed her concern by tweeting:
Rohingyas are being thrown out of Myanmar and Srilanka bcos of their terrorist activities, but CM is giving them land, helping them to settle down in #WestBengal posing danger to national security. #BengalAgainstRohingya
When will you help WB? @PMOIndia @rashtrapatibhvn
