23 transgender people of the 530 Kudumbasree workers will be posted at 11 metro stations across Kochi.
Kudumbasree is the Kerala state government’s poverty eradication mission and will provide employees to the Kochi metro. The better educated members will be positioned at ticket counters, the rest will be engaged in housekeeping jobs at the stations.
The Aluva-Palarivattom corridor will see transgender people working at the ticket counters, cleaning the platforms, parking, customer relations etc.
Elias George, KMRL’s MD, commented,
We would like to give members of the transgender community their rightful share in different jobs at stations. There will be no discrimination between them and women workers. The metro agency is the first government-owned company in India to formally appoint them. I hope other firms in Kerala give them a respectable opportunity to work. Society’s mindset towards them will change only by direct interaction with them. Moreover, members of that community cannot at all be blamed since they are born with such a biological situation.
All the 530 workers have been trained at soft and technical skills and have been imparted training at safety. More workers are being trained to be employed at stations between the Palarivattom and Maharaja’s College Ground.
