Romantic, sensuous, bold, controversial…the ‘kiss’ in Hindi cinema is all this and much more. This phenomenon has always been a hot topic of discussion and debate – who locked lips with whom, how many kisses does a film feature, who is the latest serial kisser and so on. It’s like the kisses in a movie make more news than the movie itself. And while the industry is opening up, once again, to this symbol of love, the kiss continues to raise more than a few eyebrows.
But interestingly, only a few know that Bollywood was the boldest during its nascent stage. Here are a few movies before the time when Serial Kisser Emraan Hashmi made kissing his monopoly. Some of them show the boldness of Bollywood before India gained freedom.
1. Pati Bhakti – 1920s
It was probably the first movie which showcased the art of loving via a kiss scene.
The movie involved Lalita Pawar in serious kiss. Who knew that she would later become known for her stock roles in the 1950s and 1960s as the hard-hitting conservative mother figure?
2. A Throw of Dice – 1929
This silent movie had an exciting kissing scene between actors Seeta Devi and Charu Roy.
3. Zarina – 1932
Zubeida, a very popular actress of the time, created a sensation with the 1932 film ‘Zarina’ with her skimpy attire and kissing scenes.
4. Karma – 1933
In the most famous movie of its time, Devika Rani locked lips with her real life husband Himanshu Rai on screen. The famous lip-lock took 4 minutes and remains the longest onscreen kiss to date.
Post-independence, Cinematograph Act was establish, ruling on-screen kissing to be indecent which got the famous “flowers meeting” concept to show love.
5. Bobby – 1973
It was only in 1973 when director Raj Kapoor encouraged Rishi Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia to kiss on screen. This marked the return of boldness to Bollywood.
6. Satyam Shivam Sundaram – 1978
Raj Kapoor yet again made Shashi Kapoor and Zeenat Aman to kiss on screen and this marked the beginning of the newer generation.
7. Ram Teri Ganga Maili – 1985
This movie took boldness to a new level with Mandakini’s clothing and the kissing scenes. It was probably the most talked about movie at that time.
8. Saagar – 1985
Dimple Kapadia became the Mallika Sherawat of the 1980’s with her iconic kissing scenes in this film..
9. Jaanbaaz – 1986
This movie showed a steamy on-screen romance between Anil Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia.
10. Dayavan – 1988
Madhuri Dixit (yes, her!) kissed actor Vinod Khanna in this movie.
11. Govinda and Manisha Koirala in ‘Maharaja’
12. Anil Kapoor and Manisha Koirala in ‘1942 A Love Story’.
Yes, they had quite a few kisses in this romantic musical.
13. Aamir Khan and Pooja Bedi in ‘Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar’
Aamir Khan has kissed all his heroines. But this one with Pooja Bedi stands out for its sensuality.
