Anand, a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) activist has allegedly been stabbed to death by some unidentified men in Guruvayur town of the Thrissur district of Kerala. In his mid-twenties, Anand was an accused in the murder case of Faisal, a Communist Party of India (Marxist) worker and was out on bail. Anand was allegedly attacked near Balrama Temple, Nenmini at around 1 p.m. on Sunday.

According to the police, he was riding a motorcycle when some men hit his vehicle with their car leading him to crash, attacked him with sharp weapons and fled on other vehicle.

According to the police, heavily injured Anand was taken to a hospital where he succumbed to death. His body has now been shifted to Thrissur Medical College for postmortem. As per a report by the Hindu, Anand was accompanied by a friend Vishnu who too was injured in the attack and is undergoing treatment. Hundreds of RSS and BJP workers thronged to the hospital upon hearing the news of Anand’s death.

The murder of Anand has, yet again, highlighted the issue of political killings between the cadres of CPM and BJP/RSS that is rampant in Kerala for decades now. BJP has claimed that around 120 of its workers across Kerala have been killed since 2001 by Left cadres. As alleged by the party, 14 of these have been killed in Kannur since Left Democratic Front assumed power in May last year. On the other hand, the Left has also put blames of a series of violent attacks and political murders on its supporters by the BJP and the RSS.

The Indian Express quotes state BJP president Kummanam Rajasekharan saying,

“Despite the recent surge in protests against political killings, the CPM is not ready to end the murderous politics. It shows that terrorists have taken control of the leadership of the CPM. Despite repeated incidents of killing of BJP/RSS workers, we have been maintaining utmost restraint. The heinous crime of the CPM is a challenge to democratic society. The CPM has now joined hands with jihadis.”

However, secretary of CPM’s Thrissur district unit, K Radakrishnan asserted that his party had no involvement in the murder. He said,

“I have spoken to the local leaders and learnt that neither the party, nor our workers, were involved in the killing. Let the police probe and find the culprits.”
