The daughter of Malaysian tycoon Khoo Kay Peng, Angeline Francis Khoo, gave up her share of the family fortune just to marry the man her father had didn’t approve of.

As per an interview with the Daily Mail’s You Magazine, Angeline (34) said that she is not on talking terms with her father.

Khoo (78) is the chairman of Malayan United Industries. According to an estimation by Forbes, Khoo’s net worth is over Rs.1910 crore. He was ranked 44th in the list of Malaysia’s 50 richest people in 2015.

Angeline is the fourth of Khoo’s five children with his ex-wife, who is former Malaysian beauty queen Pauline Chai.

Angeline met Caribbean-born data scientist Jedidiah Francis in 2008 at Oxford. When Angeline told her father about her idea of getting married to Francis, he refused to give his blessings.

“I believed dad’s stance was wrong, so there was no question about what was right,” she said in the interview.

“I’ve been fortunate to have that perspective: you can have money and it’s a blessing; it allows you to do things and gives you options, but there are also things that come with it, such as control. Money amplifies negative characteristics and that can cause problems. To walk away from that was actually very easy. I didn’t even consider it,” she added further.

It is reported that the couple got married in the chapel of Pembroke College where Francis had worked earlier. The wedding was merely attended by 30 guests, with no one from Angeline’s family.
