Kerala might create history by becoming the first Indian state to amend Section 377 of the IPC, thereby decriminalizing homosexuality.
LGBT activists in India have been fighting a long, tireless battle against Section 377 which criminalizes any and all sexual acts “against the order of nature” — a Draconian law which has been used to target, punish, intimidate, and fleece, the Indian gay community for years.
Dr. Shashi Tharoor recently met with Kerala Chief Minister, Pinarayi Vijayan, to discuss the possibility of amending Section 377. This meeting comes not long after Dr. Tharoor’s letter to the Kerala CM, asking him to take an initiative on decriminalizing homosexuality.
According to reports, Law Secretary, B G Harindranath, has drafted a
…bill on amending Section 377 which will be introduced in the assembly.
Is it too much to hope that Kerala might take this step and prove, beyond all doubt, that it isn’t only the most literate state in India, it is also the most liberated?!!
