Munnar Assistant Superintendent of Police Merin Joseph has hit out at a news article that listed the country’s “11 beautiful IAS, IPS officers,” for objectifying the women.
Joseph shared the article on her Facebook profile and lashed out at the press, especially the vernacular press, and called it patriarchal and misogynistic.
“These are bold and brave officers working in the complex bureaucratic system in India, negotiating their way through the good, bad and ugly of our body politic – and here we have a list of officers whom people can ogle at,” she wrote.
The post went viral on Facebook, with some agreeing with her.
“Couldn’t agree more… Media should be more sensible and responsible.. Their reliance on making Masala News for TRP must be vehemently condemned,” read a comment by Hargovind Singh.
However, she also received criticism with one saying that her motive for writing the post was to make the story popular, since she was also included in it.
The Bhaskar listed this article under its education section.
Joseph was the youngest IPS officer of Kerala cadre. She cleared the UPSC exam at just 25.
She is married to Dr. Chris Abraham, and resides with her husband in her Government Guest House, Kochi.
About her job, she said that she always wanted a dynamic job; dressed in uniform and hair tied back and a respectable designation. She did her BA and MA in History from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi. Her parents have been settled in Delhi for over 35 years.
