James Gardener says, “Life is an endless process of self-discovery” and he couldn’t be more right about that. How many times do we learn new things about ourselves through other people? Remember that time someone said, “You’ve a good voice”, or something similar? Such revelations s about oneself happens due to certain occurrences or situations. Whatever the reason, they do help us become better people.
Here we help speed up that process a little. Follow these to walk down the road to self-discovery.
1. Love yourself
Someone has said that. “If you don’t love yourself, nobody else will”. Hence, the first and most important step is accepting yourself as you are, albeit with the flaws and then trying to work on getting rid of those flaws.
2. Try something new every now and then
If you continue to do what you have always done there would be no surprises or changes in the outcome. How then would you know if you are good or even better at something else? Hence take the plunge and step into the unknown once in a while. It is only through new experiences that you’ll know how you react or feel in certain situations.
3. Ask people for feedback
Sometimes (in fact most of the times) our characteristic and behavioral traits are more known to people around us than to our own self. Hence ask people how they liked what you have done.
4. Engage in activities that make you happy
Try to understand and gauge what makes you happy. It could be anything from reading, writing, dancing and cooking to simply watching TV. Self-discovery is all about knowing what makes you happy or miserable.
5. Let your creativity and dreams strive
We live in a world where most of us bound by societal expectations and norms like, “Only an Engineering degree will get you a well-paid job”. Hence, most of us never know what our creative side is. Because we never let those innate talents develop. So, time to let the creative side come up and stop punching in those codes and numbers.
6. Let go or steer clear of the noise around you
We can’t thrive in a negative environment. With the noise and stress in our lives there is hardly any time for self-discovery. You simply do not have the time to find answers that might probably not help pay the bills at the end of each month.
Would you rather continue living this life then? If your thoughts are filled with mental defilements like mindless gossips, unfair comparisons, snide remarks, and thoughtless comments, it will be hard to find the space for more loving and kind thoughts. The process of self-discovery is not just about finding negatives about yourself but also about finding love for yourself and nurturing yourself.
7. Ask yourself about what is your life purpose
This is probably one of the most important steps to self-discovery. Everyone is good at something, but only when we do it and give it our best, our life’s purpose is served. So get to know what you are best at and move towards that.
8. Find inspiration in the things around you
There is something we can learn from everything and everyone around us. There are so many success stories around us, get inspired and learn from them and maybe in the process you’ll also learn something about yourself.
9. Journal your life
Haven’t we looked back at certain experiences and realized they taught us some of the best lessons? Such experiences happen every day and we never think twice about them. So it would be a good idea to write about the day. Reading about it later on might provide inspiration.
10. Spend some time alone-just with yourself
The answers that you seek, surface more easily when in a state of mental relaxation. And this can happen only when you are alone, without anyone around, even your phone!
11. Think about everything you do, see and hear
Our actions and words are what make us what we are, hence processing them in our minds would definitely help us understand ourselves. And the same goes for what everyone around us does and speaks as well.
Irrespective of whether you learn from your successes and failures, the key lies in continuing to move forward and learn more about yourself, with each experience. And in that lies the way ahead for growth as well. Hence, practice these to become a better version of yourself.
