Social discrimination on the basis of race, caste, color, etc is prevalent in our society, and, unfortunately, even the youngest of stars have been victims of such prejudices in the entertainment industry.
One such example is of television actress Ulka Gupta. She recently spoke about facing discrimination on the basis of her color in the industry when she was only 7 years old.
Ulka won everyone’s hearts in her role as Rani Lakshmibai in the show ‘Jhansi Ki Rani’ at a very young age.
But many of you would not know that it was not her first show. At the age of 7, the young actress debuted in ‘Resham Dankh’, which went off the air in just a few months because of low TRPs.
According to reports, Ulka said that she had to struggle in the industry due to her complexion even at the age of seven.
“At a very young age I came across the dark side of our industry. My father and I used to go for auditions on a daily basis. And every time, I was disappointed to see that the producers are looking for a fair girl. According to them, fair girl represents an up market girl.”
“I was rejected so many times just for the sake of my dark skin,” she added.
Ulka also talked about a role she bagged in the show ‘Saat Phere’ only because of her dark complexion. The show focused on the girl’s courage beyond her dark complexion.
The actress further said, “Surprisingly, after so many years, my casting agent still gets few requirements stating, ‘need a fair complexion girl’.”
