Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on September 16 ordered to release water from the Mettur Dam so as to help farmers in irrigating samba crops in the delta districts.
While addressing the media, Jayalalithaa said that they are witnessing steady inflows of water in the Dam with Karnataka’s release of water from the Cauvery River.
The dam in past few days have touched 84.76 feet (capacity 120 ft) and is likely to receive more water from Karnataka reservoirs in coming days, looking at Supreme Court’s order.
She also added that the water from Mettur Dam would be released from September 20 onward and would help with irrigating samba crops which is a form of paddy.
Tamil Nadu had announced a package of Rs 64.30 crore so to help Delta farmers raise Samba and with the release of water, they can finally take it up.
