Veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan and his wife Jaya Bachchan, who too is a senior actress need no introduction. During their acting career of close to 50 years, they have given a number of spectacular films to the entertainment industry and movie lovers.
Apart from acting, the two have also tried their hands at politics. While Jaya Bachchan could survive in the complicated Indian politics and is Samajwadi Party’s Member of Parliament since 2004, Amitabh Bachchan dropped out of it soon after joining.
Recently, during her presence on the program Idea Exchange by the Indian Express, Jaya Bachchan revealed why Amitabh Bachchan quit politics so soon.
Talking at the event, Jaya Bachchan recalled her childhood and how her father, who was a political journalist, kept her aware of the politics and issues of the country. Then she recalled the time when Amitabh fought election in 1984-85 from Allahabad and did door-to-door campaigning.
Amitabh won the election but soon realized that he could not sustain in politics for long, after which he resigned and went away from Allahabad.
Reminiscing the time, Jaya Bachchan revealed that Amitabh’s joining politics was an emotional decision. She further said:
“I suppose all artistes are sensitive. Soon after getting into it, he was not happy and wanted to leave. He said, ‘I can’t do this. It’s not my style. I can’t live like this, I can’t speak like this.’ He was never comfortable. He is a very private person and when you are in two professions that are public — cinema and politics — your life becomes exposed. He couldn’t handle it. And then he couldn’t handle all that goes on in the backdrop. I think he felt vulnerable and he decided that he couldn’t do it any further.”
