Imtiaz Ali’s upcoming film, ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka Sharma seems to be in a new controversy. Censor Board chief, Pahlaj Nihalani, has said that he’ll clear the promos only if 1 lakh people vote in its favor.
The Censor board, led by Pahlaj Nihalani, could not digest the usage of word “intercourse” uttered by Anushka Sharma’s character. The makers of the romantic comedy were asked to delete the word if they wanted to air the promos on TV channels.
Nihalani said in an interview with Mirror Now,
If you take voting from the public, I definitely promise you that I’ll clear this word from the picture as well as the promo. You should take voting from the public…1 lakh.
Nihalani introduced this new rule but he seems to have forgotten that filmstar Shah Rukh Khan’s popularity and fan following goes up to 25 million (2.5 crores) combine that with Anushka Sharma’s popularity and that number goes up to 35 million (3.5 crores).
Thanks to star cast and individual fan following, ‘Jab Harry met Sejal’ might easily get away from the wrath of censorship. What if this ad-hoc rule formed by Nihalani becomes applicable to relatively smaller budget films with anew star cast? They may not be able to garner those votes due to a smaller fan following and will have to face the fury of censorship, which is certainly not acceptable.
