The Centre and the BJP have launched a full scale attack on Congress over the Ishrat Jahan case, accusing it of having wanted “elimination” of Narendra Modi.
The BJP’s attack came after a media report established that the first affidavit, which accepted Jahan was an LeT operative and there was a plot to eliminate Modi, was also signed by then home minister P Chidambaram.
However, Chidambaram had reportedly denied signing it earlier.
What this means is that Chidambaram approved the original affidavit in addition to the amended one within two months in 2009 that stated there was no conclusive evidence against Ishrat.
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju suspected that there was pressure on Chidambaram from elsewhere that made him take the decisions. He accused Chidambaram of failing in his duty as Union home minister by disapproving the intelligence inputs in the Ishrat case.
On his part, Chidambaram said he cannot comment on the issue of the first affidavit without perusing the files and notings.
