Actors are known to go to extreme lengths to glide into the skin of their characters, whether it’s putting pounds of weight, coupled with thick layers of makeup, to look a certain way or gymming hours after hours to acquire that chiselled physique with bulging muscles. Having said that, not every actor is fond of taking up challenges, especially when the challenge is to play a parent early in your career. But newcomer Ishaan Khatter, who is only one film old, seems to have no reservations about playing a father in his second Bollywood outing.
The actor, who initiated his career earlier this year with movie maven Majid Majidi’s Beyond The Clouds, plays a father in the second half of his next Dhadak, which is a Hindi remake of Nagraj Manjule’s Marathi movie, Sairat (2016).
When we asked Ishaan Khatter about how tough it was to play that part in the movie, especially when he himself is a 22-year-old boy, he said:
‘I don’t know if it was particularly tough. I think what important is the little things, the mannerism. Especially when there is a time-lapse, you have to be thoughtful about little things. The way you are holding him (the child). After some time, you are used to it.’
The young actor goes on to add that since he is playing a young father in the movie, there is a certain graph to his character, which was a little difficult for him to grasp.
‘It is also important to understand that, in the film, he is a young father, so I couldn’t really play him like somebody who is very well equipped to be a father. There is a graph to that as well. So, I think, in general graphing, the character was the difficult part. There was a time-lapse of almost five years. And by the end of the film, these characters have grown a lot. So, to keep all that in mind and being thoughtful and bringing that into the physicality was the difficult part.’
Directed by Shashank Khaitan and produced by Dharma Productions’ head honcho Karan Johar, Dhadak rolls into theaters on July 20, 2018.
