The IPL is a breeding ground for young cricketers who play their best cricket every year. It has been seen that many youngsters impressed with their performance almost every year in the IPL since 2008. Even the selectors are taking not on the players who might be the next player in Indian Blue Brigade.
Here, take a look at the list of emerging player of the year from all IPL season. These players performed well on domestic crickets and also improved their game facing against the best international players.
Shreevats Goswami – 2008:
Shreevats Goswami was the keeper-batsman and played for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the first season of the Indian premier league. He was also the part of Indian under-19 team that won the trophy that year. Shreevats had a mediocre tournament by making only 82 runs in 4 innings with one fifty only.
He never got the chance to play for team India in international matches. He is currently playing for SunRisers Hyderabad and played only two matches in IPL 2020.
Rohit Sharma – 2009:
Rohit Sharma became one of the star cricketers in India with the record of having two double centuries in limited over cricket matches. He is also the most successful captain in IPL. Rohit was part of Deccan Chargers’ in 2009.
Rohit impressed everyone with his 362 runs in 15 games managing a strike rate of 114.92. Rohit Sharma became the opener in the Indian cricket team. Now, he is the captain of Mumbai Indian since 2013 and has 5 IPL titles as a captain.
Saurabh Tiwary – 2010:
The IPL 2010 was the breakthrough year for Saurabh Tiwary. He played a few games in the previous IPL seasons, but he played in the middle-order for Mumbai Indians. He gave tremendous performances by scoring 419 runs in 16 matches at the strike rate of 135.60. He was also selected in the Indian cricket team but played only three ODIs.
Iqbal Abdulla – 2011:
Iqbal Abdulla had made a name for himself in IPL 2011 by being part of Kolkata Knight Riders. He took 16 wickets with an economy rate of 6.10 in a total of 15 matches. It was the first time in the IPL history that Kolkata Knight Riders were qualified for Playoffs. He didn’t get the Indian cap.
Mandeep Singh – 2012:
Mandeep Singh has impressive domestic seasons but he didn’t get the chance to play for team India yet. Mandeep Singh became the emerging player of the year in IPL 2012. He made 432 runs in 16 games he played for the team Kings XI Punjab. It is rumored that the franchise will not be going to retain him for next year.
Sanju Samson – 2013:
Sanju Samson is another wicketkeeper-batsman who is struggling to represent team India in international cricket. Sanju Samson began his IPL career with Rajasthan Royals, later moved to Delhi Daredevils, and then back to the original franchise.
In the IPL 2013, he managed to score 206 runs in the 11 matched he played that include one fifty as well. He has improved his game after every IPL season and is now considered one of the star players in IPL
Axar Patel – 2014:
The IPL 2014 was the career-defining season for left-arm spinner Axar Patel. He played for the Kings XI Punjab under the captainship of George Bailey. He got 17 wickets with an economy rate of 6.14. If this is not enough then he has also impressed with his batting skills with some invaluable cameos.
Shreyas Iyer – 2015:
Shreyas Iyer is the captain of Delhi Capitals and he began his career with the franchise as well. He scored 439 runs at the strike rate of 128.36 in just 14 matches. He became the team captain after Gautam Gambhir started playing for Kolkata Knight Riders.
2016 – Mustafizur Rahman:
The Bangladesh seamer was the first overseas player to become the emerging player of the year in IPL 2016. He made his international debut in 2015. By playing for SunRisers Hyderabad, he took 17 wickets with an economy rate of 6.90 in the 16 matches.
2017 – Basil Thampi:
Basil Thampi is an Indian fast bowler who came into the limelight playing for Gujarat Lions under the captainship of Suresh Raina. He snapped 11 wickets in the 12 matches. His best bowling figure was 3/29. It is expected that he will be seen in an Indian jersey soon.
2018 – Rishabh Pant:
Rishabh Pant emerged as the finest Indian player in IPL 2018 by scoring 684 runs in just 14 matches with a strike rate of 173.60. The wicketkeeper-batsman also played for the Indian international team. However, he didn’t perform well in the IPL 2020.
Shubman Gill – 2019:
Shubham Gill is one of the finest players in domestic cricket. He is best known for picking the gaps and running between the wickets. He was noticed when he scored 296 runs in 14 matches with a strike rate of 124.37. As per IPL news, today Shubham Gill is an asset to KKR.
Devdutt Padikkal – 2020:
Devdutt is an opening batsman of Royal Challengers Bangalore and he impressed everyone with his consistency in the recent IPL season. He scored 473 runs in the 15 matches he played for the team.
