Though weird news stories come from anywhere, it seems like the weirdest ones often come straight out of India the most. From teacher being absent from school for more than two decades, parents scaling school building walls to help their kids cheat on the exam, people fighting for years to prove that they are not dead to making the rapist look after the cows, where on earth can you hear more such weird news stories? In fact, these are just only a few from the long list of such insane news stories from India.
Well, in this article, we bring you a few weird news stories that came straight out of India. Take a read and definitely, they will make you say WTF.
1. Rapist ordered to look after cows
A 23-year-old man was convicted of rape and abduction in 2013. He was tried under the juvenile court as he was only 17 at the time of the crime. However, under the ruling of the law, he was ordered to spend six months looking after cows at a local cowshed. While the brutality of the Delhi gang-rape case has led people across the country call for a harsher punishment, the punishment has raised many questions about the seriousness of India’s juvenile justice system.
2. Man fights for years to prove he’s not dead
This is one of the strangest problems in India. Family members are often falsely declared deceased by own family members in order to seize the properties. One such man was Santosh Kumar Singh, who fought for years to prove that he’s alive and that his brother stole his land right under his nose. Santosh had to run from pillar to post in 21st century India to prove that he is alive, and not ‘dead’ as certified by a government document.
It seems there are thousands of people who have been shockingly declared deceased. No wonder, this happens only in India.
3. School teacher absent for 23 years
It seems Sangeeta Kashyap was recruited as a biology teacher in 1990. She spent her first year teaching in the town of Dewas in Madhya Pradesh, after which she took three years of leave. In 1994, she was transferred to a school in Indore but then applied for maternity leave and has never turned up for work. School authorities have reportedly said that they do not know when she was last paid a salary, but she is still listed as an employee.
Sangeeta sets an Indian record for staff absenteeism in 2014 when it was discovered that she’d been ignoring her post since 1991. No wonder, absenteeism is a pervasive problem in government-run schools in India.
4. Parrot arrested for shouting obscenities
The police in Maharashtra’s Rajura detained a parrot for allegedly cursing at an 85-year-old woman. The woman claimed her stepson trained the parrot, who is known as Hariyal, to curse at her because of an ongoing land dispute between the two families. “On seeing me, the parrot uses bad language and foul words. That is why I have complained thrice in the last two years,” the woman said.
5. Parents scale school building to help students cheat on exams
In one of the most bizarre incidents, about 600 high school students in Bihar’s Hajipur were expelled for cheating after their parents scaled the school building walls to help them cheat on exams. The incident has received widespread attention after television footage showed parents and friends of students scaling the outer walls of school buildings to pass cheat sheets to students inside taking exams.
